There is a quality to these photos and to that place that is hard to describe – sort of other-worldly; old-fashioned and disconnected, at least to me. I especially like the last photo, Saturday Walk to Shule.
i have been playing with colour and b&w to get that emotional and “retro” look both with the iphone and the olympus shots. this posting uses photos from each camera and post processing with apple apps or adobe lightroom. i am glad that what i have done has been communicated to you. it means i have done something right. i try but never know unless i get this kind of feedback.

Not sure if u got my previous comment. I agree with the comment above from your friend, Lori. These pictures remind me of some old pictures stuck in our old closets. It is interesting. I particularly like how you play with the lines and patterns.
thank you. i really am trying to play with these colours to remind us of the past as i take photos of the present. and i am definitely trying to take note and emphasize lines. the feedback makes me think something may be working.
The photos really tell the story. Splendid high-end isolation, is it that? Just wondering, knowing you in China full of life, how you cope living in such end-of-road place.
high-end isolation? what do you mean by this? it is difficult for me, sometimes, living in this community. however, there are many active older people. most people are not sedentary and a younger generation of people have moved in, in the last five years or so. many of these people are from quebec. it is not a place that i would choose for myself but it is a community where people feel safe and have the chance to use the facilities for all sorts of activities. i, as you know and is obvious from this blog, like to get into the thick of life and take chances. i mostly feel safe everywhere. but for those who seek warmth and a community with things to offer it works. i will have to look at the photos, see what i use to tell the story after my interviews. i certainly believe these communities are isolated but i interviewed a couple, today, who use this place as a springboard for enjoying life and retirement outside of century village and yet enjoy what this place has to offer should they want to take advantage.
I love and admire your photos of life in Century Village. While you have shown the diversity of life here, my impression is that they do not reflect the complexity of retirement living in this community. You have shown life in the outdoors but have not included all the creative and physical activities of life within the club house. Also, people take advantage of outside activities which take place in various surrounding communities like book reviews, lectures, and classes at nearby community colleges, libraries, and the university. In other words, the activities mirror what retired people do in their permanent homes up north in the cold (and what those who live here all year round do, as well).
i did not realise that i was giving a skewed picture but perhaps i have done exactly that. as i mention in an earlier response to a comment from daktari164 – there are many active older people. most people are not sedentary. i have tried to show this in the photographs but perhaps it is not emphasized enough and/or the writing has not stressed this either. i will see if i can live up to the challenge and show the younger or more active side of the century village world. we shall see if a concerted effort to paint the life here can be “normalized” by me.
